In the 1996/97 season, Rapid Wien finished 2nd in the Austrian Bundesliga, reached the ÖFB-Cup final, and competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage. In the 1997/98, Rapid Wien placed 3rd in the league, reached the ÖFB-Cup quarterfinals, and participated in the UEFA Cup but were eliminated in the first round.
